I'd just take it out of the bottom personally, that is a far easier method. Worse case though, you'll need to remove the bonnet should you want to lift it out the top. There is no reason why it won't.

they will come out the top but its tight to split from the box or take it out with the box
to drop it out the bottom you will need to take it out on the sub frame
to take it out from the bottom you will need to un the steering colom inside the car
and suspension

Take it from top, I recently removed a complete X18XE petrol, still attached to the gearbox from out of the top. And re-fitted it in exactly the same manner.

No manifolds removed, just power steering pump and aircon compressor removed (and all wiring, pipes etc.) could not have been easier.

Bloody hard work taking the subframe off, and twice as much to get it back on.

Hi.Astobbs.Do you think the diesel would be the same?
It's good to hear from someone who has actually done it.
Thanks again for that.

Regards algheroslk.

PS.What does ASTOBBS stand for?

Should be as the water pipes just unclip from the
Matrix the rad pipes just un clip the a/c pump
Has 4 bolts the power steering has 3 I think
Pop the drive shafts split the linkage
You will have it in and out with in a day it's
The best way to do it the wires are just on a large
Plug

Stands for Andy Stobbs - my name haha.

Yeah I can't see the diesel being any different, the petrols all have cast iron blocks too, so much the same weight as a diesel.

You will need the bonnet removed of course, probably easier to cut and re-join the piping to washer jets; as they can be a real fiddle to get out without damaging either the jet or the bonnet paint.
Undo your minimal diesel wiring, fuel line etc, don't forget the clutch pipe - it has a small spring steel clip which holds the large alloy end of the pipe onto the piece sticking out of the gearbox.
gear linkage itself needs removing etc. etc. you know all the rest.

Found that with a rope around the very front of the engine (on the alternator bracketry with a petrol) and a second length lifting in middle - around the exhaust manifold, that the angle was pretty much perfect, the front came out first, and the gearbox tipped up and cleared everything perfectly, didn't have to tug this way or that at all.

Regards
Andy

Ps. you aren't that far away from me Algheroslk, less than 45 mins down the A55

Hi. andy.
The reason for removing the engine and gearbox is that i think the clutch is on the way out.
The clutch does not slip or judder in forward gears but in reverse it wont go up a hill in revarse.
In reverse it judders and just don't like going backwards.
Any idea's?

Regards algheroslk.
