The std air box with k&n flat panel is right for my engine so what to do next...been chatting to Matt about what he's done in the past.
I have decided to loose the 3 pipe mod and have bought some 70mm flexible ducting which should feed under the d/s headlamp...now I have 2 choices
connect to my coldfeed in lower bumper which worked for the cone filter but may cause probs with the sealed box...flies...water etc
or just feed the new pipe behind the grill tie it there but have it pointing down.
Not sure whether to drill the airbox at mo, but if it brings back the roar, with minimal heat-soak...
The bonnet mat I removed in the summer and lined the bonnet with reflective matexisting so there's good circulation under the bonnet when moving.
If your going to drill the airbox do it only on the wing side, and below the filter line to ensure the air forced in is filtered. Thats what I did, as its criminal not listening to such an amazing engine note on these V6 lumps.
I'd personally keep the 3 pipe mod, and place the duct into the aperture already in place as GM intended. Method two for me would be the behind the grille mod. I wouldn't place it in the lower bumper grille, or fog light surround because it could suck in water.
Matt suggested 6 pencil size holes on the wing side, and there is an opening there, as that is where I have the cold air feed
I was thing that about adapting the std, but if I remember the air came in directly above the fan, the two other pipes were resonate pipes, either way pointing down is a must.
True as the panel filter will catch stuff, I've modified the Opel grill and opened the inserts behind the badge + added mesh so I could attach the ducting there, hope there's enough space
I did the 3 pipe mod a few years ago now and if i remove, will have enough space to run the ducting to the grill.
Will drill box tomorrow, that will draw air in from the drivers wing + I'll be able to hear the induction roar, but as Matt mentioned 6 pencil sized holes.
Very good point, had a chat with a mate about this tonight his thoughts were not to drill, if I loose the 3 pipe attachment and have one directed feed of a similar bore i would notice the difference or have a cone filter but mount it in the bumper not in the engine bay - have heard about that mod before.
Mounting an air filter so far from the AFM will create undesired issues in most cases. Sometimes it works, sometimes it creates havoc for the electrics trying to figure out airflow for fueling.
It will also cause a "ramair" effect and possibly change fueling mixtures and curves. Sometimes this is a good thing, sometimes its not so good, so tread carefully.
Its been good tonight, I'm going to leave as is as the point of returning to std was to reduce the air temp, I did the 3 pipe mod which we all know works, plus most of my runs are under 50mph and I'm loath to introduce any new untested elements until I'm happy the car is performing as it should, no induction roar well i can live with that.
