I'm sorry, but i don't know all the right mechanical therms,so please bear with me .I have a vectra B year 1999. Despite being very old and very used, the engine still work all right, but i'm afraid i can't think the same about the electrical side of the car.
So a couple of weeks ago the connecting piece between the ignition barrel and the ignition switch broke, so i had to break the contact, and the only way to turn the ignition on was with a screwdriver in the switch while the key was in the contact.some friends told me if by mistake i leave the contact between 2 phases of the switch it can burn, and so it happened. i bought a new switch replaced it , and it's still not workin.
when the switch burnt a small smoke cloud went off the switch, and nothing on the dashboard appears since then. then headlights work, hazard lights work, i can't start the engine anymore, please help
1. The black cylindrical block, that wraps around the key end of the ignition barrel. That needs to have its connector firmly fitted (Its the key chip sensor for the immobiliser)
2. The ignition switch needs to be firmly and correctly fitted to the ignition barrel, which in turn needs to be connected to the loom.
3. When you turn the key in the ignition barrel, is it moving the ignition switch as well?
4. Exactly what happens when you put the key in the ignition, and then turn it?
5. Exactly which items on the dashboard (and others) are NOT working? This is important.
6. Is any of the looms wiring burnt/melted?
7. In the meantime, please closely check fuses 22, 29 and 38.
i turn the key in the contact and turn it to the last step in the ignition because of the steering lock. the key doesn't do anything else except unlocking the steering lock and letting the chip turn the engine on, and the actual engine i turn on by using a screwdriver which i place in the switch.and a few days ago while doing the same maneuver again, the switch made a small smoke cloud which quickly vanished. the dashboard right now is dead anything i do

Did any of my above post make any difference?
You need to check your electrics pronto. Right now you don't even know if your getting power to the ignition switch.
