How can i get more power out of my Supertourings X20XEV engine?
Its running 145 at the moment with a 2.5 inch cat back exhaust and pipercross panel filter.
Im thinking maybe cams and superchip, has anyone done this, what are the power gains?
I read an issue of total vauxhall where someone got theres to 180, now that would be good if i reach that lol
I know the easiest way is to put in a different engine but i want it to be as original looking as possible in the engine bay.
To be honest, I would look on VV OC at Nick's (old SE reps) red 2.0 16v estate - Assuming he still has it. He spent an absolute fortune on that from what I remember and got good results from the engine.
Your other option is to replace the XEV for a C20LET... Even a standard lump would be considerably more power than now. Or 3.0/3.2 conversion.
If it was me, I wouldnt be spending a penny on the XEV engine, I'd be replacing it with a V6/LEt engine or something.
Not sure really it would over a few years adding a bit at a time. I really dont want to go down the route of engine swapping, not after amazing power just enough to put a big smile on my face when i accelerate :-)
I was going to go mental on it and put c20let in, but it just costs so much all at once and with me and the other half getting married this year cant go blowing loads of cash lol
S**T!! just seen the price of some of the things i had in mind lol
What sort of money would i be looking at for a really good turbo engine and getting it fitted?
Well, you could get a 2.5 v6 engine for about £50... Then get the cambelt kit, water pump, clutch and gearbox seperately over time.
A set of used GSi cams and a 3.8bar FPR your talking GSi power around the 200hp mark, on a decent setup with a proper cat back exhaust system.
It depends what route you want to take really. If you want say another 20-30bhp your going to be looking at throttle bodies really. If your happy with 150ish bhp you could get stainless downpipes, a decent cat back and sport cat (or no cat) and a decent air filter setup. With a proper remap you might see that power.
Whichever way you go its going to cost money. You'd spend more with a V6, but you could buy a complete MOT failure with bad bodywork (or one at auction) and then use it as a donor. If you had the time you could even put your 2.0 in the V6 donor and sell it on! You'd likely make all your money back on a decent auction car.
EDIT:
You'd be looking a lot of money for even a ropey LET engine. Maybe time to go for a Saab turbo engine which will be cheaper? Or do the above with a V6 engine.
Thanks lee havent even thought of a v6 There seem to be a few options. How would a v6 go in? I assume i would have to buy a complete car and transfer everything. Im sure ive read before that a v6 wont go into a 2 litre car or am i mistaken?
A V6 engine will go into a 2.0, but you need the 2.5 if you want an easy life.
You would be best to change the engine loom as well. Basically take your donor engine out on the subframe. Then remove your engine on the subframe. Then remove the donor loom, ECU, key transponder (around the barrel) and remove all of yours, and replace it with the donors. Then put your V6 in and bolt the subframe up. Wire in all of the electrics to the engine, then all you do is switch the transponders in the keys from the donor car to yours...
Obviously you need all the coolant hoses etc from the V6 donor, but fitting most of them inc the loom is a lot easier with no engine in the engine bay! I would also budget for a new cambelt kit and water pump, spark plugs, fuel filter, engine oil and filter, and coolant, and also for a new clutch kit - You dont want to be removing it again once your finished so its well worth changing while on the floor!
Once all bolted together it should start fine.
The crucial thing to remember is your car MUST have the V6 ECU, key transponder (around the barrel) and the chips from the V6 keys in order to run. You do not need to change the lock set to that of the V6s, you just need the chips in the keys - Its also essential you have the code card for the V6 as well, as you'll be using the security details for the V6 car to add or remove keys in future.
lol you make it sound easy. Might be worth a look though and try and get a low mileage accident damaged gsi sell of all the bits i dont need to make money back.
Thank you for the idea
