Default Vectra 2.0 Diesel Year 2000 loses power?

My vectra has been losing power over the last few weeks, however it does it when it wants as I have driven it regularly, however it conked out the other night and after ten minutes it started and was fine, got in it again today and it started chugging again at 3000 revs.

any ideas

You would be worthwhile checking the vacuum hoses in the engine bay, they have a habit of cracking with age, and can cause poor running.

Are you getting the engine management light come on when it has its episodes?

thank you for your help.

the engine management light isn't coming on, but anyway which pipes are vacuum hoses? there's so many of them.

I'll try and find a picture of the ones you need to check most... But most vacuum hoses are the small 10mm ish diameter hoses littered around the engine bay.

It would be worthwhile to also check your turbo pipework, to make sure its not split, or collasping as well.

I would also remove the EGR, and check the condition of the gasket, possibly replace it... Its just two screws to remove. If its clogged up then it could be the cause of your loss of power.

The crank sensor can also be known to create problems as well, shortly before it fails. My advice would be to do the free things first.. Check all your vacuum hoses, intake and turbo pipework and make sure they are all in good condition, and not cracked. Then replace the EGR gasket, and see how you go.
