Default Vauxhall Vectra 2001 51 plate 1.8 sxi Electrical Problems?

Hi. My dad has a 2001 vectra 1.8 sxi that has recently developed electrical problems. Basically every so often while driving all the electrics go off - Radio, Display showing temp and radio station, dash, lights, rev and speedo counters and the indicators. Only way to rectify this is to pull over, turn it off and restart again. The problem is very random. Some days will happen 3 or 4 times a day other days not at all. The car has been in the garage twice and both times been referred to a vauxhall dealer but still happens. Anybody else had this problem? Any ideas what this may be?

Sounds like the multi-timer.

Had this problem and took me months to find out what the problem was.

The multi-timer is located behind the fuse box. It just slots in.

Here you go:

Sorry it's such a small pic.. was from Google images

I would probably agree with Tom on this: However, it is also worth checking your earths, if you have earth's that arent conducting then yoiu will be breaking the electrical circuit. My money would be on the multi-timer though.

Just to bounce this up to the top - this is exactly the same problem that I'm currently having with my Vectra C (02). On mine when the majority of the electrics cut out, very oddly, the headlights and tail-lights both come on!

I've been looking online, but I can't see any reference to the Vectra C having a multi-timer unit. Is it there on the C, or did they not use them after the Vectra B's were discontinued.

Any help gratefully received. The car is going into the garage on Friday and I'd love to give them some pointers.

No programming needed fo multitimer. But they are different from pre-face to facelift models so make sure you get the correct one.

Re: the vec c, does the engine cut off aswell?
