An engine crankshaft sensor provides the signal for crankshaft position and speed(rpm).from this and other sensors the computer can adjust the ignition timing for optimum conditions. The camshaft sensor tells the computer witch cylinder is firing,so ignition timing can be adjusted for 'individual' cylinders.Pretty sophisticated, that means for eg if cylinder 3 is running a little rich then the computer can weaken the mixture or change the timing for that cylinder only.Without this sensor the various adjustments would have to be averaged or best guess. So,if the computer has individual cylinder control the power and fuel consumption should be better and the exhaust emissions should be lower.
if the cam position sensor is faulty, P0340 this will limit the rev range to anywhere between 4.5-5.5, this will cause the engine management light to come on, this will also affect your emmissions as the ecu will over fuel slighty to make sure the engine runs from a slightly weakened spark.
past experience suggests that you use a genuine vx part cam sensor to replace faulty one. some cheaper ones either dont work or dont last long.
yeah, its fault 340. I have a replacement camshaft sensor off the engine that was removed. Was hoping to get the car passed then change the sensor at my leisure.

Whats also known to cause issues (iirc theres a bulletin on TIS about it) the wiring for the cam sensor becomes faulty somehow. There is a kit to sort it (which i usually get if someone has a P0340 code) which costs about £60 from Vauxhall. That includes a new modified sensor (with oval plug instead of rectangle), length of loom with a modified plug on the end and some wiring connectors although i'd advise soldering the wires together and finish off with some heat shrink sleave.

£60 sod that... if the wiring is naff i'll replace part of the loom. Won't cost me nothing and will probably last longer. lol

put the "new" sensor in and it solved it all. All is well.
