Default Recommended Free Anti-Virus, firewalls, spyware, general software

So, since we seem to see a few questions regarding this, I thought I would compile a short list for those that arent sure which software is best, or is recommended. All software listed here is free, and you are not required to pay in order to use it.

Clicking the name of each item will take you straight to the download page of that software. Also below each heading, is a short explanation of its use.

So lets get started!

Internet Security Software (Anti-virus/firewall combined in one application)

Firewall and AntiVirus Free Software Download from Comodo

Anti Virus Software

This is essential for any computer used, and protects you from virus'/worm's and other nasties found in files or online. Ensure it is always up to date, and virus scan regularly to ensure your computer remains virus free.

AVG Free Edition
Avast!
Comodo Anti-Virus
Avira AntiVir Personal

Panda Cloud Free Edition

Firewall Software

This is another essential piece of software for your computer. A Firewall stops illegal/compromising traffic entering from both the internet and from leaving your computer. It must always be turned on, and kept up to date. The standard Windows firewall (XP SP2+/Vista/7) is not good enough defence in itself, and must not be relied upon.

Comodo Pro Firewall
Zonealarm Free Edition
Ashampoo Firewall Free
PC Tools Firewall Plus Free Edition

Spyware Software

Very usual for searching out malware, and spyware that can compromise your computer, and personal information. This is highly recommended, and should be scanned at least once a week to ensure your system is clean. Malware, whilst not always dangerous, can slow down your computer as well.

Ad-Aware Anti Malware
Spybot - Search and Destroy
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
Spyware Blaster
Spyware Terminator

Internet Browsers

For those that find Internet Explorer too slow, the following browsers will speed up your online experience considerably. I much prefer Firefox, and have used it for years myself! Opera is also very good, and both are feature packed.

Firefox
Opera
Google Chrome
Safari

Office Software (Word/Spreadsheets etc)

You really dont need to spend a fortune on Microsoft Office for occasional home use. OpenOffice has a massive following, and is just as good - And its totally free!

OpenOffice

For the next installment I'll add other useful software like graphics programs etc... All free of course, because life is expensive enough!!

AVG is going pay only as of the 1st DEC 09 so what would you guys recomend to replace it?

A used to use avira but didn't get on with it (can't remember why, might have been something to so with manually having to start scans or summat).

Help would be appreciated!

Chris

I would use either Avast! or Comodo personally. Currently I do use Kaspersky 2010 Internet security on all our windows computers due to getting volume licenses, but Comodo Internet Security is very good as long as you don't mind the very active Firewall alerts.
