Default Best free firewall for windows Vista

Our paid subcription Kaspersky is nearly up, and with not working anymore I'd rather not pay a for a internet security package when I dont use Vista much on my Quad core pc.

So what would the best free firewall be, for a Quad core pc, that runs 64bit Vista Home Premium (and will shortly be running Windows 7 64bit).

Comodo firewall is out on contention, because it messes with my Vauxhall software, and stops it working (despite several hours trying to resolve it to no avail), so its a hard decision as its by far the best protection you get for free.

Currently I'm using Avast! antivirus, as it seems highly recommended from researching online/reviews etc. What does everyone else use?

Has Windows Firewall evolved into something thats actually fully working and safe these days, and is it viable for security use?

Thanks in advance,

Lee.

I don't use Vista, but I do swear by the following Anti-Virus's-

1. Nod32
2. Avast!

As for a firewall.. I'm not using one at the moment, but 2 I know are good-

1. Sygate
2. Comodo (Although I don't like this one as it alerts you too often with useless info)

All available from FileHippo.com - Download Free Software for free (Although I think Nod32 may only be a trial)

Last time i checked sygate did not work with Vista. I use Comodo and its very good, not for the casual user though as you do get a few warnings.
some good stuff linked from here

Cheers, I've always used comodo, but its out because it messes with critical Vauxhall installations I rely on for various different things, despite several hours trying to locate the issue and resolve it.

I thought for a while after elimating various other issues/thoughts that it might be Comodo's specialist DNS re-routing system, but even with stopping that and keeping my normal DNS settings, its still not allowing me to run two essential programs - So makes it un-useable.

Will check that link Mark, thanks mate.

Avast is good, but I couldnt run Comodo firewall (my most recommended) as it stopped certain software from running... Personally I wouldnt have normal purchased McAfee, but since it was so cheap for 12 months updates, I thought sod it!

All my software works perfectly too, which is cool.
