That have served at Kandahar, Afghanistan?

I'm interested in a civilian deployment there, mainly due to tax free money (43k!). I gather with 25,000 people there its fairly safe, and as far as I am aware I will remain on-site, but I would like to hear from any armed forces personnel that have served there. Any advice or comments are most welcome.

I would be spending 14.5 weeks a time there, with 3 week leave in-between.

I'm only considering it right now, as it would be a huge sacrifice to make in regards to being away from Donna and especially our two girls - Id miss out on a lot, but in return we could live very comfortable, and with spending 14.5 weeks expenses paid at a time in Kandahar would mean my expenses would be very low.

Its something I seriously need to consider, as financially it would be of huge benefit to us.

Health and safety officer, for several health n safety disaplines. Weird I know, but its a good salary and thankfully I'm suitably qualified in regards to health and safety....

...But, I'm not experienced with fire safety, which is a negative but you never know. I'm going to speak to a few people before making my mind up though.

From speaking to someone already though, Kandahar airbase is fairly safe, so it depends if I'm remaining inside it really. Without a serious security detail I'd be very concerned venturing outside of the base. lol.
