Default Windows XP running virtually in Linux...

Just had to say something... Been annoying me for ages that I needed to keep compatability with documents for my college work, and Openoffice totally rearranges everything when I open coursework from my college using it, meaning I 'had' to use Microsoft Office on a windows platform.

Ive hated windows for a long time, and been using Linux even longer, and until recently I've had mixed sucess using a Linux utility called 'Wine'.. Well a buddy told me to stop sticking to it and spending hopeless hours convincing it to work and move over to another Linux software item named rather aptly, 'Virtual Box'

I've been messing with it to pass the time in the last couple of days while I eagerly await the 200... I've just got it pretty much set up now, and I'm happy to say the Vista crap from my computer is now totally gone, and for the first time in ages I'm booting Linux on my Dell by itself.

Done some pics, bear in mind its (Windows XP) running virtually, so no physical discs, and its actually using a virtual disc as its hard drive, and is running bloody quick as well!!

Anyway pics:

For the first time in my life I actually love the look of the desktop of my computer... Was always annoying using such a nice operating system then being forced to use Vista with its slowness and constant crashing. The fact my quad core is now running like it should be using 64bit software I'm sure is helping!!

I gotta say I'm bloody impressed especially with using office virtually, its actually quicker like this than it was when my quad core was running vista as well!

I use Linux (more precisely Ubuntu 9.04) for home computer use, as its so much nicer to use, doesnt crash etc etc. However, due to studying and having to use MS Office for studying its meant I've also had to use windows as well, so I've been dual-booting for ages.

Now having installed Virtual box I dont need to dual-boot my dell pc now. Sun's virtual box enpowers Linux users to run OS' virtually, like in this example above. So I'm actually using windows, in a window on my Linux desktop. Its also quicker than running it using a physical drive like everyone else just using windows software only. It also works faultlessly and to all purposes, my windows XP installation actually thinks its running on its own computer system - Its not its using a virtual disc and pc configuration I made.

It basically means I dont need to have anything MS as an operating system on any of my computers anymore - Something I've been trying to achieve for a very long time.

If all of that doesnt make sense, just look at the pics and admire the desktop you'll never get looking so nice using any MS operating system!
