Thumbs down Renault 5 handbrake question

Guys,

Maybe a bit off topic, but I thought I might ask anyway.
The Renault of the misses has a non working handbrake.

I have adjusted it under the car, and now it does something, but only just.

Before I had to pull it all the way up, and nothing happened, but now it can't go that far anymore ( 10 click no or so ), but the brakes won't bite enough..

If you put the handbrake on, and you try to drive away, the backend of the car goes down a bit, but you can drive away easily . it will keep the car in place when it is parked but nothing more than that.

at first I thought that the pads were dirty, so I put the handbrake on, and drove the car up and down the street, but part from a bad smell nothing has changed...

Is there any way to adjust a drum handbrake apart from the adjustment screw under the car?

Thanks for letting me know

if you take the drum off in front you have two shoes (seperate) in the middle at the top is a cylinder that pushes out the shoes just under that is a bar with what looks like a wheel in a star shape you use that to adjust the hand brake but you will have to slacken the handbrake underneath as well also check the condition of the shoes if there low best to replace them as well tbh

This could be due to a number of issues.

The handbrake cables could well be stretched, but its most likely seized or out of adjustment/worn out brake shoes.

You'd be best to remove them and grease the linkages up and replace the shoes if badly worn.

New shoes are ordered..
going to open it this weekend to see what's happening inside..
Brake shoes are only a fiver on Ebay..

Thanks for the replies... sure I will get it sorted, keen with cars, but just wanted to be sure...

Another braking question...
Am I right that my Veccy has a dual braking system at the back?
Discs for normal braking, and drums for handbrake?

I have read that online, but not sure.. never heard of something like that...

I always thought it's either one of them...

Thats correct matey.

The discs and pads are used for the hydraulic brake system, and on the inside of the disc is the shoes. The inside of the disc is the drum itself, so the shoes work by pushing onto the inside of the disc.

Thats OK mate. Its actually a really ingenius why of dealing with the brake setup. Drums and shoes are much more reliable than disc/pads at holding the car still on slopes.

Some very high performance cars actually use two calipers on the rear, one for the handbrake, and one for the hydraulic braking effort!

Sorted.. adjustment in the drum sorted the problem... I can make a handbrake turn with it now if I want.. I guess I won't try with the soft suspension.. will be on it's roof in no time, and tell me how I should explain that to the misses hahaha

Erm, sorry love, a rabbit ran in the road with its ickle little bunnies and I didn't want to squish mother bunny as baby bunnies would be all alone......

...So in a last ditch effort I did a handbrake evasive procedure and rolled the car...

....The mother bunny and its baby bunnies were fine though thankfully...
