Default Vectra 2.6 GSI running problem

Rather than spam up my new project thread, I thought it best to start a new thread so here we are.

Basically- when I turn the car over, it doesn't start right away. It takes maybe 2 seconds to start, then it runs lumpy for about a minute before calming down and ticking over smoothly.

I have everything I need to do a full service on it at the weekend-
  • New plugs
  • Air filter
  • Fuel filter
  • Pollen filter
  • Oil filter
  • Flush the old oil out with engine flush and refill with decent new stuff

I'll also clean out the plenums with gunk as I'll probably end up painting them anyway.

I'll also clean out the oil catch tank too while I'm at it, but I'm just wondering; if that doesn't solve my problem- What else could it be?

Maybe the coil packs? (Hope not as I know they're not cheap!).

The car runs fine after a minute, and drives with lots of guts, so I can't see it being anything serious, but any suggestions would be welcomed with open arms

Grab a ICV gasket and just remove the idle control valve and give it a clean up mate.

Do the 2.6 GSi's still utilise the secondary air pumps? If so, it could be a leaking secondary air pump fouling things up until it turns off. When you bring it over I'll have a look for you mate.

My ST200 runs crap until the secondary air pump closes. As soon as its closed it runs absolutely perfect.

Okaaaaay!

Well- since I have no idea of any of the 2 parts you mention- I think I'll let you take a peek when I come over & see you lol.

I'll have it in bits over the weekend anyway, so even if you just want to point out to me what I need to clean up- I can do it then. Thanks Lee

No worries Tom. I'll have a look when you next pop over dude. Does it still do it when the engine is started hot? Or just cold?

Not sure tbh mate I never noticed. But it'll be hot (90 degrees!) by the time I get to you, so we'll soon find out lol.

BUMP

Can any 2.6 specialists give me any ideas? Does my throttle body have an Idle Control Valve INSIDE it?

Or is the throttle body even able to come apart as if so I'll take it apart & clean it up anyway while it's off over the weekend.

Chrisfraser might be best to ask this question too.

I think the ICV is fixed to the reverse face of your throttle body as it sits in your engine bay, but I dont know enough about the electrics of the 2.6 engine bay to be certain.

Right..... forget about the ICV.

Biggest issue on the 2.6's are the plugs and coolant temp sensor.

The plugs need to be the bosch 4 electrode ones that are specified by vaux. As it is low compression is you don't get the right plugs they get sooty really quick.

Next the coolant temp sensor is a nice easy one and it helps big time with starting.

I put a how 2 on here somewhere.

The coolant temp sensor- is that the thing everyone seems to be replacing now to help with fuel efficiency or am I getting confused with something else?

Plugs- I have got quad core NGK's- supplied by my local motor factors.. think they cost about £12, and they're the same ones I paid £24 for, for my old sri from ebay.

As long as they're quad core's- I'm assuming they'll be OK?

Don't suppose you have a part number for the coolant temp sensor do you Chris?

And just to be clear- it's not JUST a starting problem I'm experiencing.. it doesn't start first time.. it takes about 2-3 seconds to start. But once it starts, the revs go up & down about 6 times, then it ticks over like normal.

Does that sound familiar?

sounds like yours may just need a bloody good service and temp sensor changing tbh.

I cant see the how2 I made on here so will post a link to another forum if nobody minds...

If you do the above and still have probs next thing I'd recommend would be the MAF.

See if disconnecting the MAF cures it before buying one though.
