Err no, you cannot drive a car without a caliper fitted! If you have disconnected the caliper from the brake line you will lose your brakes. If you havent disconnected it, you will pop the seals in the removed rear caliper and then you will also lose hydraulic effort.
However, if you fitted the caliper, the new pads and the pins and it would be ok, because the handbrake and the caliper action are two seperate circuits, and therefore the handbrake not working will not effect the calipers operation.
The caliper MUST be correctly fitted in order to drive the car though!
The rear springs for the shoes are a tight fit. You have to stretch them in order to fit them as they remain under tension. Its persurverence, and getting the 'nack' of doing it - Nothing more! Unless the old springs are broken in two, they are perfectly useable.
