When I had my freelander, there was a faulty earth from the starter so after speaking to a few landy specialists (not STEALERS) i was advised to run a neg straight to the battery, this solved the problem.

Might be worth taking the connections off the earths in the engine bay giving them a clean with sand paper and replace. may find it does the trick mate.

Mark- Sorry to ask, but can you please explain all the symptoms you're facing, including when the problem(s) started, how frequent they are, and whatever other info you can give.

I've only ever had electrical faults wrong with my car, and there's been a lot- so maybe I can give you some suggestions

ok this is for you Tom
initially it was a flat battery about 5 weeks ago so i charged the battery and the following morning after work i went to start it and it was flat so i went and bought a new battery and all was well untill a week last monday when the new battery was flat so i took car to the garage to have the alternator checked he said the alternator was u/s so i bought a alternator from the local scrappers had it fitted and it was ok for 2 days or so then i went to start the car and the battery was flat so i have bought a battery charger from halfrauds, so ive now taken my alternator the reconditioners he tested it and its ok
so in all every 2 - 3 days battery flat recharge it ok again but alternator is only charging the battery very slowly so guy suggested checking the wiring for the alternator/ started etc
i havent had any electrical work done to it only thing ive done is put induction cone on it
hope this helps and i hope it helps too

Sounds like the identical problem to what Tom's is suffering with, which reminds me I was supposed to be looking up the wiring diagrams.

Markf:

How was the wiring when you removed it? Were the terminals onto the alternator corroded on the ends of the connectors?

Markf & Tom:

Lower the rear seat, and open then shut the boot. Does the boot light turn off?
Are the interior lights coming on for no reason when the doors are closed or the car is locked??

Also, check that the connections to the alternator, starter and battery are secure. Remove the negative battery lead, then with some sand paper, remove each lead, and sand the connector on each lead, AND the fitting, then replace and tighten up. On the right suspension turret there is a black cover, with brown wires going into it... Remove this cover, and sand the connectors and pins, then re-connect them again. Re-connect the negative lead.

Then check tension on the longest run of the drivebelt, by twisting it sideways. It should twist til the side of the belt is facing you, but no more. Whats the condition like? Really rough and worn, with cracks on the outer face means its time to replace it. Are you getting any squeeling from the drivebelt at any point? When was it changed?

I think the problem is likely to be an earth lead not earthing properly. I will try and find the time to look at the wiring diagrams in the next day or two and see if I can locate exactly where the wires are. A damaged wire wouldnt earth though, so I think its bad contact on either the alternator, or the starter.

Its by no means guaranteed to stop your problems, but its a very good start that isolates a number of possibilities.

Yes.. it does sound very similar to my current problem actually.

Some days the car will be fine.. other days it won't.

However the difference is- I know my fanbelt needs changing.. it screeches on cold mornings until I give it one almighty rev.. then it shuts up.

Until I get it done- I won't know for sure that's not the problem- But a mechanic friend of mine says it WON'T be the problem.. so I think over the weekend- I'll take Leeky's advice and start using his troubleshooting advice above.

Fingers crossed yours is something simple mate like a bad earth that just needs cleaning.. but I know with my car- nothing electrical is EVER simple!
