This can be one of three problems:-
1) You have fitted an incorrect starter motor, where it has a too small drive which is riding over the flywheel ring gear. - Unlikely
2) You have problems with the flywheel ring gear, where it has worn out or slipped - Unlikely
3) Your new starter motor is faulty, where the clutch mechanism is slipping allowing the drive to throw in but slips and will not turn the engine - Probable fault.
